Chili Cook-Off

September 2004

By Martin Perkins

Countrybriar Lane recently held their "2nd Annual September Chili Cook-Off".  Once again there were 16 entries, so the competition was tough!  The championship trophy (a granite rock) was passed on to a new champion as the Perkins' Family made an unsuccessful attempt to defend their title.  Every family was asked to name their entry so that voting would be unbiased.  The award for "best name" went to the Kamper family for "Bert's Butt Burner" - named after Cheryl's Dad and his chili recipe.  After an hour of tasting and palate cleansing (beer drinking) the votes were cast and we ended up with a tie - both winners getting six votes each.  Tied for first was "Smarty Jones" (the Mueller Family) and "Mamma Jamma" (the Hornbaker Family).  Tracey Mueller's main ingredients for "Smarty Jones" was ground meat, beef broth, cumin, chili powder, tomatoes, onion and her secret ingredient of celery.  Patricia Hornbaker's main ingredients for "Mamma Jamma" was ground meat, kidney beans, tomatoes and her secret combination of spicy chili seasonings.  The winner hosts next years cook-off and since the Hornbaker's house is closer (for most of us) they were officially given the granite rock!
